A Letter from Trevor Brewer: My Journey to Imvelo Safari Lodges and the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative

A Personal Journey to Imvelo Safari Lodges and the CRCI

Dear Reader,

As I journeyed to the heart of Zimbabwe’s wilderness, I had no idea just how transformative this trip would be—not only for me but also for the communities and wildlife that call this place home. My destination was Imvelo Safari Lodges, nestled near Hwange National Park, a place where the stark reality of conservation meets the unwavering spirit of human resilience.

Imvelo is more than a lodge; it is a beacon of hope. This land, once a hunting concession, has been transformed into a sanctuary for wildlife and a lifeline for local communities. My visit was a vivid reminder of the profound impact conservation can have—not only on the preservation of endangered species but also on uplifting the lives of people in one of Zimbabwe's most impoverished regions.

From Grazing Land to Rhino Sanctuary: A Community's Sacrifice

One of the most symbolic acts of this initiative was the decision to establish the rhino sanctuary on communal land. The headsman, or chief, had to convince the community—a group whose wealth is intrinsically tied to livestock—to give up precious grazing land for the sanctuary. This was no small request. Grazing land directly supports their cattle, the very embodiment of their livelihood and wealth. By agreeing to this sacrifice, the community demonstrated a remarkable ability to see beyond immediate needs, embracing the long-term benefits of reintroducing rhinos to the area.

The sanctuary serves a dual purpose: it provides a safe haven for rhinos while acting as a barrier to prevent elephants and predators from encroaching on farmlands and livestock. This forward-thinking approach not only fosters coexistence but also symbolises the community’s understanding that the rhino’s presence will ultimately bring opportunities and income that far outweigh the grazing rights they relinquished.

Decisions That Empower

Another element that struck me was how the funds from the rhino tours are managed. Instead of outsiders dictating how the money should be spent, the funds are given directly to the community, who decide their own priorities. Their choices—education and healthcare—reflect their focus on building a sustainable future. The results are already evident: schools now have classrooms, children are fed during lessons, and a clinic has been established to provide much-needed healthcare, eliminating the need for gruelling 25-kilometre journeys to the nearest facility.

With their foundational needs met, the community is now branching out into self-sustaining projects, like chicken runs, which provide both food and income. This autonomy not only fosters pride but also ensures that every initiative is tailored to their unique needs.

From Hunting Grounds to Conservation Haven

Imvelo’s journey from a hunting concession to a conservation haven is nothing short of inspiring. Starting with Water for Wildlife, they established year-round watering holes to keep animals within the area. What began as a means to sustain wildlife has grown into a holistic approach that supports people and nature alike. Today, the sanctuary’s success has drawn international photographers, eco-tourists, and conservationists eager to witness its transformative impact.

Stories That Stay With You

During my visit, I had the privilege of meeting the Cobras, a local anti-poaching unit, many of whom were once poachers themselves. Through training and steady employment, they now dedicate their lives to protecting the rhinos they once hunted—a profound shift from survival to stewardship. Listening to their stories, I was reminded of the power of second chances and how conservation can transform not just landscapes but also lives.

At the local school, I sat with children who shared their dreams and favourite animals. Almost unanimously, they cited the rhino—not for its size or rarity but for the tangible change it symbolises. To them, the rhinos represent education, healthcare, and opportunity—a testament to how deeply intertwined conservation and community development have become.

A Community Transformed

Imvelo’s efforts extend far beyond wildlife. The funds from rhino tours have supported clinics, feeding programs, and infrastructure projects that empower the community to thrive. Every initiative is a stepping stone towards a brighter future, from the chicken runs that generate income to the electrified fences that protect both people and wildlife.

Personal Reflections

This trip left me profoundly inspired. Conservation, I realised, is not just about preserving the wild; it’s about partnerships, sacrifice, and the belief that a better future is possible. Standing on this land, hearing stories of resilience, and witnessing rhinos roam free, I felt a renewed sense of hope.

Imvelo Safari Lodges and the Community Rhino Conservation Initiative exemplify what can be achieved when communities and conservationists work together. The community’s decision to prioritise rhinos, at the expense of their immediate needs, speaks volumes about their vision for the future. It’s a powerful reminder that every choice we make, from visiting places like this to supporting their projects, contributes to a much larger story—one of coexistence, compassion, and commitment to a shared future.

Yours sincerely,

Trevor Brewer
